UCC Executive Director dines with journalists, stressing principled media-regulator engagement
The Executive Director of UCC, Hon. Nyombi Thembo, has emphasised the importance of restoring human connection between the communications regulator and media practitioners, noting that journalism goes beyond equipment, licences and compliance – it is ultimately about people.
Speaking during an informal engagement with journalists at his residence in Wakiso district, Nyombi Thembo explained UCC’s mandate as a regulator, which includes licensing and when necessary, intervening in broadcast content. However, he emphasized that regulation must be balanced with humanity, dialogue and mutual respect between the Commission and the media.
“Every microphone, camera and transmitter has a human being behind it,” he said, stressing that journalists are not just operators of machines, but professionals whose work shapes society and informs public discourse.

He further revealed that while he often interacts with media owners and senior executives in formal settings, he felt it was important to directly engage the journalists who work behind the scenes; the reporters, producers, camera operators and presenters who bring stories to life daily.
The engagement was therefore intended to create a relaxed, cordial and human-centred environment outside boardrooms and newsrooms, allowing for more open and honest conversations and shared understanding of each other’s duties and responsibilities.

The Executive Director reaffirmed UCC’s commitment to maintaining open channels of communication with media practitioners and promoting a regulatory environment built not only on compliance, but also on trust, partnership and respect.
After the candid conversations, the Executive Director joined journalists to share a meal, enjoy music, and take part in a friendly football match, bringing a successful day to an enjoyable close.
