Support to other Researchers

Research support for ICT research done by researchers, research institutions and innovators. This funding stream includes two schemes under which proposals may be submitted.

1 Support to Researchers

This will be awarded for problem-solving research that can address problems relevant to the needs of Uganda in the ICT sector or in other sectors through ICT.

Eligibility
Funding will be limited to Ugandan citizens that are professionally qualified with recognized merit and scientific track record in research with show of great promise.

Criteria
Applications shall be reviewed the following criteria:

  • Originality: demonstration of creativity, critical, independent thinking and advanced scholarship in exploring a challenging idea or potentially transformative concepts;
  • Potential for impact: potential to address an important problem or a critical barrier to progress in the ICT sector or industry; importance of contribution to, and use by, end-users; potential gain relative to (any) perceived risk
  • Feasibility: clarity and realistic goals, timeframe, work plan; appropriateness of, and justification for, the budget.
  • Capacity: applicant possesses strong qualifications and/or knowledge; demonstrates ability to carry out the project successfully; has access to necessary resources outside of the grant request.

Terms of Funding
The grant shall cover costs for research, including field studies and related expenses.
The maximum funding to an applicant in this stream shall be capped initially at USD 10,000.

2Support to innovators

This will be awarded to enhance the innovation capacity and output of individuals or micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It will also facilitate potential exploratory work in early stages of pioneering applications of ICTs that introduce unconventional, innovative approaches or ideas which translate into a new ICT product, process or service.

Eligibility
The following eligibility criteria shall be used:

  • Applicants must be individuals that are Ugandan citizens or SMEs incorporated in Uganda.
  • Must have an objective to grow and generate profits through the development and commercialization of innovative, technology-driven new or improved products, services, or processes in Uganda.
  • The applicant must undertake at least 50% of total project costs.
  • The project duration should be not more than 3 years.
  • Market introduction of the project output is foreseen within 2 years after project end.

Criteria

Applications shall be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • The project seeks to develop a new product, process or new services around ICTs that surpass existing products, processes or services in terms of their functions, parameters or features.
  • The competitiveness of the applicant will be permanently raised, new markets will be opened, and jobs will be created or safeguarded.
  • Applicant possesses the necessary qualifications and competences or has suitably qualified scientific and technical personnel or is sourcing temporary employment of staff from research establishments to undertake the project.
